Trans World News 2-08-15

By Sabrina Samone, TMP

This week in trans news maybe called the tabloid week. Bruce Jenner has yet to publicly talk about the rumors of his potential gender dysphoria, but his mother has confirmed 'according' to tabloids. The week ended for Jenner with a deadly car crash. Jenner is ok and news is continually coming out about the others affected. Shortly before the crash, the newest Transgender journalist Zoey Tur, slammed Jenner on CNN.

Bruce Jenner is being criticized by transgender TV reporter Zoey Tur for allegedly capitalizing on his gender transformation. Zoey, who is also a notable figure in the LA transgender community, has also accused Bruce of trying to “sell a show.”
While there is a possibility that may not be the case, Bruce has strong ties to the famous Kardashian family, which has led many to question whether or not he has ulterior motives for publicizing his transition. His decision to go public with a documentary-style reality series has sparked quite a controversy.
Since Bruce is a notable public figure and motivational speaker, Zoey feels he should be an advocate; speaking out about the transition now instead of waiting for a “big reveal.” During a recent interview with Don Lemon on CNN, Zoey argued her perspective of Bruce Jenner’s transition ordeal.

Zoey says to CNN, “A lot of people are very suspicious about what’s going on because of his connection with the Kardashians, and they feel that if Bruce is transitioning gender, come out with it, you know – speak up. We need our role models and there’s no greater role model than the world’s greatest athlete. What’s the big deal? Many feel that gender is pitched in the reality show and using this build-up to gain more momentum and get paid to do an interview. This is a civil rights battle. This is not about selling TV shows. This is about saving lives.”

Zoey, herself made headlines this week as she returned to television news with a segment on "Inside Edition." She made history Tuesday night as the first-ever transgender reporter on a national television network show by joining "Inside Edition"
On Tuesday night, Zoey Tur will make history as the first-ever transgender reporter on national television when she joins the “Inside Edition” team as a special correspondent.
“It’s great to be back,” Tur told TheWrap. “I’ve been told by local Los Angeles news directors that I would never work again. I felt horrible about it. I almost believed it.”
Formerly known as “Chopper Bob,” Tur made a name for herself as a helicopter pilot who covered the infamous O.J. Simpson police pursuit in 1994 and the Los Angeles riots in 1992.
Tur was also credited with saving the lives of 54 people during a freak Southern California storm in January of 1988.
A local fire department asked her to pilot her AS-350B Eurocopter through 60-knot winds, at zero visibility, to airlift stranded tourists from 22-foot seas that pounded apart their hotel.
Tur has received numerous awards for her heroism. But it’s a different kind of bravery that has now landed her in the national spotlight.
She has made several magazine and television appearances since the announcement and fast becoming an influential voice in the Trans*.

One of the media's favorite girls, Miley Cyrus is also making news within Trans Society. She is reportedly planning a benefit concert to bring awareness to the death of Leelah Alcorn. She's been reported has being so moved and distraught over the 17 year old's suicide that she tweeted;

((((#happyhippiefoundation doin sooooome mooooore bad a$$ 💩 to change the world we're living in! Eradicating pointless judgment is at da veryyyyyyy top of my list! #ALLlivesmatter I can barely hold it in what this happy hippie is up toooooo!!!!!!! This shit gets me sooooo hypppppped! We aren't free till we give everyone their own freedom! Don't get stuck in your head and your own right & wrong! LOVE LOVE & MORE LOVE is what we are desperate for!Fuckkkkkyasssssshapppppyhippppie!)))))

You go Miley Cyrus. Major kudos along with, Ariana Grande, Joan Jett and Melanie Safka, who are reported as potentially being a part of the concert.

This celebrity response comes at a critical time as the anxiety of far too many transgender deaths so far this year. Most recently, Taja Gabrielle DeJesus was fatally stabbed Sunday morning in San Francisco, less than two weeks after another transgender woman of color was killed in a stabbing in Los Angeles. SF Weekly reports that DeJesus, 33, died at the scene.

DeJesus’s Facebook shows she worked for TRANS: THRIVE, a drop-in center for transgender people, and one mourner who appears to be DeJesus’ sister closed her post with the tag #TransLivesMatter.
“Four transgender women of color have been killed in less than a month and this is nothing short of an outrage, a national tragedy, and an epidemic,” Chai Jindasurat, who coordinates programming with the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP), told BuzzFeed News in a statement.

Great news out of Thailand:
Thailand’s new constitution may protect transgender people from discrimination—but not in the way that you think.
Thailand made headlines last month for proposing that its new constitution should prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender identity and gender expression.  That would put the Southeast Asian nation ahead of 32 U.S. states and all but a few countries.

It's past time more effort in the United States is taken to protect the growing number of transgender people.

Major supportive energy to our newest brave sis for being visible. Fashion model Geena Rocero recently announced why she felt the need to come out as transgender. Promoting the belief that through visibility we are strengthened and one way for the world to accept transgender people is for us as transgender people to accept ourselves.
